Rectal Cancer 

• Rectal coil only if indicated by the ordering MD
• Rectal administration of 120 cc of warmed ultrasound gel

1. SCOUT
2. AXIAL HASTE – whole pelvis
3. CORONAL HASTE – whole pelvis
4. AXIAL DIFFUSION – b values of 50, 400 and 800

MD check for tumor planes (all subsequent sequences should be oriented to the tumor)

5. AXIAL OBLIQUE T2 – small FOV, high resolution
6. CORONAL OBLIQUE T2 – small FOV, high resolution
7. SAGITTAL T2 – small FOV, high resolution
8. AXIAL VIBE – small FOV, high resolution

Inject contrast – post-contrast planes should mirror T2

9. AXIAL OBLIQUE VIBE
10. CORONAL OBLIQUE VIBE
11. SAGITTAL VIBE

PREPARATORY INSTRUCTIONS

Light dinner the night before the exam, NPO (solid food) for 8 hours prior to exam, lots of clear liquids the day of the exam Take fleets enema 2 hours prior to exam and bring second enema in case necessary at the time of exam
Arrive 1 hour prior to study
During this hour patient should drink 8-16 oz of water
